AWA unveils 102-seater Embraer E190 to boost Ghana, West Africa connectivity
Africa World Airlines (AWA) has added a 102-seater Embraer E190 aircraft to its fleet as the airline moves to expand its operations and strengthen air connectivity across Ghana and West Africa.
The new aircraft was unveiled at the Accra International Airport as part of AWAâs plans to increase capacity for domestic and regional travellers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of the World Trade Centre, Yvonne Botchey, who represented AWA Founder and Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV, said the E190 was the first of several aircraft the airline plans to acquire over the next year.
âOur name is the first clue that Africa World does not intend to restrict itself to domestic operations. And our new E-190 aircraft is the first of several that we intend to acquire over the next year to aid the fulfilment of our vision of supporting the development of Africa,â Togbe Afede XIV said in remarks delivered by Ms Botchey.
He also expressed appreciation to the government for its support since AWA was incorporated in 2010 and began operations on September 21, 2012.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, said the arrival of the aircraft represented more than an expansion of AWAâs fleet, describing it as an opportunity to deepen partnerships and support sustainable growth in tourism.
âThe arrival of the Embraer E-190 aircraft into the fleet of Africa World Airlines should be seen not just as an addition of a new aircraft but a symbol of progress, partnerships and possibilities of sustainable growth,â she said.
The ceremony was held under the theme, âExpanding Horizon, Elevating West African Connectivity.â
Transport Minister calls for lower airfares
The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, meanwhile, urged domestic airlines to reflect the governmentâs decision to waive duties on parts for domestic airlines in their fares.
He said the measure, together with the deployment of larger aircraft, should help make domestic air travel more accessible to Ghanaians.
âConsidering the recent announcement by His Excellency that all the duties on parts of domestic airlines will now be waived, we want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, Africa World Airlines, to also look at their affairs and also let it reflect on the Ghanaian travellers in their business sector, so that our people can also enjoy some reduction in airfares,â Mr Nikpe said.
He added that larger aircraft could encourage more Ghanaians to travel by air and experience domestic airline services.
The E190 addition comes as AWA seeks to expand its capacity and strengthen its role in connecting Ghana to destinations across the wider West African region.
