The ODRO’S Foundation in Cape Coast, Ghana, has provided people with disabilities with mobility aids, assistive devices and educational materials. The 16-year initiative aims to support the independence, dignity and participation of people with disabilities in public life.
As MyJoyOnline reports, the 2026 initiative delivered 13 wheelchairs, two walkers, four crutches, one pair of orthopedic braces, 30 spare wheelchair tires, 20 rubber tips for canes, as well as 20 mattresses and 20 items locally known as chopboxes.
Support for students
The mattresses and chopboxes are intended for children with disabilities who are receiving education in senior high school. According to the foundation, these items are meant to make their time away from home more comfortable and easier in everyday life.

Maame Samma Peprah, Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Registrar of Companies, who supports the initiative together with her father, said that the assistance is not limited to providing necessary items. According to her, even a wheelchair, crutches or a mattress for a student can significantly affect a person’s daily life and ability to study.
An initiative since 2010
The project was launched in 2010 at Victoria Park in Cape Coast after an appeal from members of the disability community who participated in sporting events and needed equipment. The partnership included Albert Barton Odro, a senior lecturer at Middlesex University in London, wheelchair engineering specialist Nesad Causevic, and Alhaji Meffle, who has led the initiative since its establishment.
With Causevic’s support, wheelchairs that were no longer in use were collected in the United Kingdom and sent to Ghana. The first major shipment consisted of 13 wheelchairs and 100 spare wheels for repair and maintenance. The foundation later expanded its support by adding educational and other essential items to the mobility aids.
