Jordan Ayew is expected to be included in Black Stars squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers scheduled for this month.

The 34-year-old, who captained the senior national team at teh 2026 World Cup in North America, is currently without a club after leaving Leicester City following the club’s relegation to League One.

Ayew made 42 Championship appearances for Leicester during the 2025-26 campaign, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He started 24 league matches.

Ayew was linked with Cyprus side APOEL Nicosia and English Championship side Blackburn Rovers, but both clubs have denied expressing interest in the forward.

The former Aston Villa and Swansea City forward is now expected to join the Championship side Sheffield United F.C as a free agent, and he is expected to be unveiled on Friday, September 11, when he turns 35.

Ayew brings more than a decade of experience in English football, having previously represented Crystal Palace in the Premier League after beginning his European career with French club Marseille.

Should the deal be completed, Ayew is expected to make a return to Black Stars squad for the qualifiers, which begin this month.

The Black Stars will travel to Bouaké to face Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

After missing out on qualification for the previous AFCON tournament in Morocco, Ghana will be hoping to secure an immediate return to Africa’s premier football competition.
