Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced that it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in the dam’s water level.
The utility company said the water level had risen to 45.2 feet following heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall in the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
GWL, in a statement, explained that with the water level nearing the 46-foot threshold, it would resume spillage as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.
The statement further directed all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate the area to avoid potential danger, while urging them to remain alert, comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.
According to the statement, communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.
GWL also called on NADMO, the District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
GWL said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates, stressing that the safety of residents remains its priority.
