Former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on Ghanaians to preserve the country’s religious harmony and embrace diversity.

Speaking at the 2026 National Maulid in Accra, held to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Dr Bawumia said the significance of the occasion extends beyond the celebration of the Prophet’s birth to reflecting on his teachings of mercy, tolerance and guidance.

He said Prophet Muhammad lived peacefully with people of different faiths and urged Ghanaians to uphold the same principle.

“I wish to urge the Ummah (Muslims) to continue to embrace diversity and to continue to live peacefully with members of other faiths, as prescribed by the Prophet himself. He lived peacefully with all. For Ghana to continue to be the beacon of peace that it is, we need unity. Let us build a united Ghana for our children,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also called on Muslims, particularly the youth, to reflect on how the teachings and virtues of the Prophet are demonstrated in their daily lives, including in their homes, workplaces and public engagements.

“I urge all of us, especially the youth, to emulate this in our daily lives. In our homes, in our friendships, in our businesses, and in our public life, let us be patient and humble.”

The event, hosted by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, brought together Muslims from across the country.

The minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, represented President John Mahama at the event and delivered the President’s speech on his behalf.
