Accra, Sept. 5, GNA – Ghanaian singer-songwriter Lawrence Mensah, known professionally as Muzic Mensah, has transitioned from gospel music to contemporary highlife and Afrobeats, describing the move as an expansion of his artistic expression.
Mr Mensah began his professional music journey in 2004 in Ghana’s gospel music sector, where he spent about a decade recording and performing church-oriented compositions.
He remained active in the gospel space until 2014, when he took a hiatus from music.
In media interviews about his departure from gospel music, Mr Mensah cited structural challenges within the local church music circuit, including limited sustained financial and promotional support, as some of the factors that influenced his decision.
Mr Mensah returned to the music scene in 2021 under the stage name Muzic Mensah, this time with a focus on contemporary highlife and Afrobeats.
Under Triple M Records, he has released a number of secular songs, including “Obi Besú” in 2023, “Lady in Red” in 2024 and “All Correct” in 2026.
The songs combine elements of traditional West African highlife, particularly guitar-driven arrangements, with contemporary Afro-pop production.
Mr Mensah’s transition reflects the growing movement among Ghanaian artistes to explore multiple musical styles while retaining elements of the country’s traditional sound.
Although his current catalogue is secular, Mensah says his music continues to promote positive themes, including resilience, self-confidence and personal progress.
He currently divides his time between Ghana and the United States while pursuing his music career and building his catalogue.
For Mr Mensah, the transition from gospel to highlife has provided an opportunity to broaden his creative identity and connect with audiences through a contemporary interpretation of Ghanaian music.
