Police have arrested seven people in connection with the violent clashes between the Gomoa and Effutu ethnic groups in New Winneba in the Central Region.

The violence, which is linked to a longstanding land dispute, left three people dead and injured 17 others, according to an update from the Public Affairs Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie.

Some of the injured are receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, while others have been admitted to the Winneba Municipal Hospital.

The clashes occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, after about 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba Township at about 10:40 a.m.

According to the Police, the group allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and other properties belonging to residents of the community.

Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and the Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the violence and restore calm.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also deployed additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to reinforce security operations in the area.

The Police Service said the situation is currently under control, with security personnel remaining deployed to prevent further disturbances and maintain peace in the affected communities.
