The Ghana Police Service has pledged its full support for the 2026 Democracy Cup, with the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu, assuring Parliament of the Service’s readiness to provide security for Friday’s clash between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The pledge came when a delegation from Parliament, led by Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, presented the Democracy Cup trophy to the Police Service at its headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as part of a nationwide trophy tour.
“We have accepted this cup, and I want you to convey to the Speaker that the Police Service is ready to participate and also to provide the necessary security during the match on 28th of August,” the IGP said. “We are ready to be beside you and behind you, and we are ready to uphold the democracy that we have for all these years.”
The IGP said the tour was an opportunity to remind Ghanaians about the benefits of democracy, which the country has enjoyed for three decades.
“30 years in democracy is not a joke. We decided to be like this, and as we have been formed, considering other options, democracy is the best, and that is what Ghana we stand for, and that is what we, the security services, are also giving support to Ghanaians to make sure that we uphold this democracy strongly for Mother Ghana, for this generation and the generations yet to come,” he said.
Speaking at the presentation, Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror said the Speaker of Parliament conceived the idea of leveraging football to promote the values of democracy, recognising that the sport has the power to bring Ghanaians together.
“The principle of unity resonates well in football. The principle of dedication, commitment, forthrightness, tenacity. These resonate well in football. Healthy competition resonates well in football. So football appears to be a good vehicle through which the concept of democracy can be propagated, promoted, sustained with this unity of purpose,” he said.
Djietror noted that the Speaker launched the Democracy Cup three years ago, and the initiative is now reaping fruits as the trophy tour continues to engage key state institutions.
“We are on a trophy tour to present the cup to the Police Service, specifically the IGP. Yesterday we were at Burma Camp and presented the trophy to the Ghana Armed Forces, led by the CDS. Today, we are here to do the simple task of presenting the trophy to you,” he said.
The trophy tour will continue with visits to the Judicial Service, Electoral Commission, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and the Office of the President, before culminating on Friday, August 28, when Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko renew their rivalry at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The main fixture will be preceded by curtain-raiser matches, including a Parliamentary XI versus Judiciary XI encounter.
