Team Ghana has unveiled two exceptional athletes to carry the nation’s highest ceremonial honours at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to youth empowerment, inclusion and sporting excellence under the renewed national agenda to position sports as a catalyst for unity and national development.

Para Powerlifting star Tahiru Haruna has been named Ghana’s King’s Baton Bearer, becoming a symbol of resilience, determination and the growing recognition of Para sport within Ghana’s sporting landscape. His selection underscores the nation’s commitment to equal opportunity, ensuring that athletes with disabilities continue to stand proudly at the forefront of Ghana’s international sporting journey.

Joining him is 17-year-old judo sensation Frema Agyei, who has been chosen as Team Ghana’s Flag Bearer. The young gold medallist represents a new generation of Ghanaian athletes whose discipline, talent and ambition embody the country’s vision of building champions for the future.

NPC Ghana said the appointments reflect its commitment to merit, inclusion and youth development

They also reflect Government’s determination, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, to strengthen national unity by giving every talented athlete the opportunity to represent the country with pride on the global stage.

As Tahiru Haruna carries the King’s Baton and Frema Agyei leads Team Ghana into the Opening Ceremony with the national flag held high, millions of Ghanaians will witness a defining moment that celebrates diversity, inspires the next generation and demonstrates that Ghana’s sporting future belongs to every citizen willing to dream, work hard and serve the nation.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games therefore begin with more than competition—they begin with a statement of national purpose. Through the courage of Tahiru Haruna and the youthful brilliance of Frema Agyei, Team Ghana carries not only medals ambitions but also the hopes of a nation determined to build a stronger, more united and globally respected sporting future.
