NLA, Fidelity Bank partner to modernise lottery operations

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) and Fidelity Bank have signed an agreement for the provision of Point of Sale (POS) machines to modernise lottery operations and improve revenue generation for the state.

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Tuesday, July 21, the Director-General of the NLA, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, said the partnership forms part of ongoing reforms to strengthen the lottery industry.

He said previous attempts to modernise the sector had failed, prompting the Authority to adopt a private partnership model to provide modern POS machines for Lotto Marketing Companies across the country.

He further announced that the instant win payment limit has been increased from GH¢1,200 to GH¢30,000 under the agreement.

He also disclosed that the NLA will phase out the use of pen and paper for lottery staking and enforce the use of electronic systems by the end of July.

“Having learnt from past attempts, we thought that the best thing is to invite a private partnership to let them do investments in the machines, so that our Lotto Marketing Companies can compete favourably in the market.

“The ultimate aim is to ensure more money comes to the system and generate revenue for the state. We will enforce regulations when we get the machines. Nobody should be seen using pen and paper by the end of July.

“We have reached agreement with Fidelity; presently, instant wins are about GHC1,200, and we are inching up to GHC30,000 with this new arrangement,” he said
