South Africa’s long-running soapie, Generations: The Legacy, has announced changes to its original 8 pm time slot, spanning for over 32 years.
The SABC 1 show, produced by Mfundi Vundla, swapped the 8:30 pm slot with popular soap-drama Uzalo.
This reshuffle is expected to take effect from Monday, 27 July 2026, and was met with mixed emotions from viewers on social media.
A user on X, @MrsMazwi23, raised concerns about the possible implications of this change.
“The viewership will drop. It’s so unnecessary. If they are hoping to increase the viewership for Uzalo, that’s not a smart move”, the account commented.
@conrad_xman echoed those sentiments by writing, “I just don’t know if this is necessary. People are used to those time slots and therefore avail themselves during those times”.
Meanwhile, @kgabee expressed sadness over losing what she described as the last piece of normality and wrote: “The country is already in bad shape. Please don’t do this. Generations: The Legacy is our last form of normal”.
Despite the different views and reactions expressed, SABC 1 sought to assure that the status of the shows.
“Uzalo and Generations built these evenings together, and both remain exactly where they belong at the heart of SABC 1 prime time. From 27 July, they simply trade places. Viewers will continue to enjoy both programmes back to back. Generations: The Legacy is not stepping out of prime time; it is closing it”, said the channel.
This announcement comes at the back of some major changes that have marked the end of Mzansi’s most nostalgic TV shows, including e.tv’s Rhythm City, Scandal, as well as 7de Laan, Muvhango and Isidingo, which used to air on SABC 2 and SABC 3 respectively.
