Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed reports linking his interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to the alleged GH¢55 million in financial and procurement-related irregularities, insisting that the issue was never raised during his engagement with investigators.
His remarks come hours after he regained his freedom on Tuesday, July 14, after meeting his GH¢50 million bail conditions following four days in EOCO custody.
“For the records: There was no discussion of any GH¢55 million with me by EOCO. None!!!” he stated.
Reflecting on his detention, the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) said efforts to intimidate him had failed and had instead strengthened his resolve to continue serving the opposition party.
According to Aboagye, his detention came just a day after he announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP, arguing that despite what he described as a “false narrative” surrounding his arrest, the truth would eventually prevail.
He also expressed appreciation to party supporters, the NPP leadership and his legal team for their support throughout his detention, saying the solidarity shown to him had reinforced his determination.
“I am out. I am unbroken. And I am more ready than ever,” he wrote, adding that he remained committed to leading the party’s communications machinery and would not be deterred by what he described as intimidation.
EOCO, however, has maintained that Aboagye’s arrest forms part of ongoing investigations into alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities involving about GH¢55 million during his tenure as Executive Secretary of the IMCCoD.
The anti-graft agency has also confirmed that the former IMCCoD accountant, Gerald Appiah, was arrested alongside Aboagye as investigations into the alleged infractions continue.
Aboagye was arrested on Sunday, July 12, upon his arrival at the Accra International Airport by immigration officers and was subsequently handed over to EOCO.
His arrest triggered protests by some NPP supporters, who demanded his immediate release and described the move as politically motivated.
