The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has warned that intermittent rain and thunderstorms will affect several parts of the country on Wednesday, July 15, as a band of low clouds over southern Ghana combines with a weak rainstorm moving westwards across the country’s northern frontier.
In its latest weather update, GMET said the cloud system over southern Ghana is expected to generate intermittent slight to moderate rainfall along the coast and adjoining inland areas during the morning hours. At the same time, a weak to moderate rainstorm observed along the northern border of Ghana and Togo is forecast to move westwards, bringing thunderstorms of varying intensity to parts of the northern, transition and middle belts.
The agency’s 18-hour forecast, valid from 6:00 a.m., indicates that mist and fog patches will develop over coastal, forest and mountainous areas early in the day, reducing visibility for motorists and commuters.
Communities along the coast, including Accra, Kasoa, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Winneba, Axim, Aflao and Anloga, are expected to experience cloudy conditions during the morning before light to moderate rain develops in the afternoon. The weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy into the evening.
Across the forest and middle belt, including Ho, Koforidua, Kumasi, Obuasi, Tarkwa and Sefwi Bekwai, early morning mist is forecast to give way to afternoon rain in several areas. Rain is also expected later in the day over Atebubu, Ejura and Kete Krachi, while parts of the Bono and Ahafo regions could experience thunderstorms during the evening.
Northern Ghana is expected to experience the most active weather conditions during the morning and afternoon as the westward-moving rainstorm affects Tamale, Yendi, Damongo and surrounding communities. Although sunny intervals are expected across much of the northern sector later in the day, thunderstorms are forecast to redevelop over some locations before nightfall.
Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 29°C to 32°C across the coastal and forest zones, 32°C to 33°C in the transition belt and as high as 36°C in parts of the Upper East Region. Minimum temperatures will range between 23°C and 26°C nationwide.
GMET has also maintained that sea conditions will remain rough and advised fishers and operators of small boats to exercise caution along the coastline.
The agency further cautioned that strong to moderate winds could accompany thunderstorms, increasing the risk of falling branches and reduced visibility during heavy rainfall. It also warned that flash flooding is possible in low-lying and poorly drained communities, urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert. Motorists have been advised to avoid driving through floodwaters and to exercise extra caution in areas where mist or heavy rain may reduce visibility.
