“I fought thoughts of retirement” – Daniel-Kofi Kyereh opens up on injury comeback

Black Stars midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has revealed he battled thoughts of retirement during a difficult spell on the sidelines, as he worked his way back from a prolonged injury.

The midfielder admitted that recurring setbacks made his recovery journey mentally challenging, with doubts occasionally creeping in.

“To be honest, I was fighting against those thoughts. The truth is that they came up here and there, especially in these difficult times of setbacks,” Kyereh said.

The injury complications kept him out of action for an extended period, limiting his progress and delaying a full return. He only resumed partial team training toward the end of 2025 before regaining full fitness in January 2026.

Describing the process, Kyereh highlighted the frustrating nature of his rehabilitation.

“I was going two steps ahead and one back. There were definitely times when it came to my mind, but I was not allowing such thoughts beyond a few seconds,” he added.

After months of persistence, the 29-year-old has now returned to competitive action, featuring for SC Freiburg II as he rebuilds match fitness. He has made five appearances since April 2026, marking a significant milestone in his comeback.

Kyereh’s return is a positive development for both club and country, as he looks to regain top form and push for a place in the Black Stars setup ahead of upcoming international assignments.
