UN not opposed to anti-LGBTQ+ Bill; concerned about identifying individuals — Bedzrah

Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Member of Parliament for Ho West and a sponsor of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, says concerns raised by the United Nations focus primarily on provisions that could expose individuals, rather than outright opposition to the bill.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, April 8, Bedzrah explained that the bill, widely referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has been referred to Parliament’s Legal and Constitutional Committee for further review.

He noted that the committee has engaged various stakeholders, including the United Nations, as part of the process.

According to him, the UN’s main concern relates to provisions that may involve identifying or publicly exposing individuals based on their sexual orientation.

“The concern the United Nations has written to the Speaker is the issue of exposing people; giving information that this person is a member is what they don’t want. Their only concern is that we should be able to protect others,” he said.

Bedzrah added that the bill will be presented when Parliament resumes from recess and expressed confidence that it will be passed and assented to by the President.
