Black Stars enter World Cup crisis as Ghana sack Otto Addo after Germany defeat

The Ghana Football Association, GFA, has dismissed Black Stars head coach Otto Addo just three months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, throwing Ghana’s preparations into uncertainty. The decision follows Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany national football team at Stuttgart, marking a fourth consecutive loss in a troubling run of form.

Crisis ahead of World Cup

With less than 100 days to the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Ghana is now without a head coach at a critical stage of preparation. The FA says a “new technical direction” will be announced soon. Recent performances have raised serious concerns. A heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria national football team exposed major tactical weaknesses, while the narrow loss to Germany did little to restore confidence.

Mixed record under Addo

Addo’s second stint produced contrasting results. He guided Ghana through an impressive World Cup qualification campaign, winning six and drawing one match. However, his overall record since March 2024; eight wins, five draws and nine defeats

led to growing doubts about his leadership. Ghana also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, ending a two-decade streak.

Critics say the team lacked a clear identity, cohesion and consistency, especially against stronger opposition. The squad often appeared disjointed in defence and ineffective in attack, despite the presence of top talents. Heavy squad rotation and experimentation close to the World Cup also drew criticism, with some observers arguing the team still looked unsettled.

The immediate priority for the GFA is to appoint a new head coach capable of restoring confidence and bringing tactical clarity. Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama national football team on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England national football team and Croatia national football team.

With time running out, the Black Stars must quickly regroup to avoid heading into the tournament in disarray.
