Former National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ghana’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alhaji Said Sinare, has launched a scathing attack on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), declaring that the party has effectively sealed its fate by electing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential flagbearer.
In a strongly worded Facebook post, Sinare argued that the NPP has lost its electoral vitality, insisting that the choice of Dr Bawumia represents a major strategic miscalculation that will culminate in a decisive defeat in the 2028 general elections.
According to Sinare, Dr Bawumia’s political trajectory reflects a steady decline in support—an alarming trend he believes the opposition party can no longer afford to ignore. He claimed that while Bawumia secured about 61 per cent of the vote during the NPP’s 2023 presidential primaries, his share dropped to 38 per cent in the subsequent general elections, and has further declined to approximately 56 per cent in the party’s most recent internal contest.
Sinare contended that a candidate whose popularity is diminishing even within his own party stands little chance of expanding his appeal to the broader Ghanaian electorate. He described the development as symptomatic of a party that is politically fatigued and increasingly disconnected from the prevailing public mood.
The comments have triggered heated reactions across social media platforms. Supporters of the NDC have praised Sinare’s remarks as a frank and realistic assessment of the NPP’s prospects, while sympathisers of the NPP have dismissed them as nothing more than political provocation.
Nevertheless, Sinare’s remarks have injected fresh tension into Ghana’s political landscape, as early manoeuvring and psychological positioning begin to intensify ahead of the 2028 general elections.
