The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has suspended the January 2026 salaries of 2,563 government employees for their failure to participate in a mandatory nationwide headcount exercise.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 30, 2026, and signed by Head of Public Relations Cephas Neosoo, the department confirmed that while the majority of staff on the national payroll have received their salaries, the payment for the affected individuals has been withheld.
This action was taken based on a formal recommendation from the Auditor-General.
The headcount, conducted across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in 2025, was designed to verify and clean the government payroll. Employees who did not take part in the verification exercise have now had their salaries suspended.
The CAGD has directed all affected personnel to immediately contact the Ghana Audit Service to verify their employment status and complete the required clearance procedures. Only upon completion of this process will their salaries be reinstated.
The department reiterated its commitment to upholding the principles of transparency and accountability in public financial management, assuring the public of its dedication to ensuring timely and legitimate salary payments in line with existing laws and regulations.
