Air Tanzania begins operations to Ghana, strengthening East-West Africa connectivity

Tanzania’s national carrier, Air Tanzania, has officially commenced flight operations to Ghana, inaugurating its Dar es Salaam–Lagos–Accra route at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The commencement of the flight between the two countries comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to open its doors to other African countries for trade, tourism, and regional integration.

The inaugural flight, which happened on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, was welcomed with a symbolic water cannon salute and a cultural performance, marking the beginning of a new air link between the two countries.

Air Tanzania is expected to operate three weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

The launch ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister for Tourism, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, and Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.

Also present were Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, and the Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.

The Tanzanian delegation was led by Prof. Makame Mbarawa, Minister of Transport, Tanzania, and His Excellency Selestine Gervais Kakele, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to Nigeria.

Airline representatives, stakeholders, and a cross-section of staff also attended the event.

The new route is expected to strengthen trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Ghana and Tanzania while providing travellers with more options for travel across West and East Africa.
