I’ll advise future NPP gov’t to prioritise economy over relief to people

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has advised that any future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government should prioritise protecting the economy over direct interventions for citizens during a pandemic.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, January 26, Mr Nyarko reflected on the government’s interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that despite multiple support measures under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, the public did not fully appreciate them.

He suggested that in a similar situation, the focus should be on safeguarding the economy rather than providing direct relief to individuals.

“If I were to advise any future NPP government—I’m not saying that something crazy should happen like the COVID, if a COVID or any global pandemic like this should happen, to our country again or the world again but should happen and Ghana is going to be affected, and if my government is in power, I’ll tell my government to protect the economy and leave the people.

Let them survive on their own. That is the advice I will give to them. Because Ghanaians will not appreciate it. Even if you save their lives at the expense of the economy, they will not appreciate it. So I would rather advise them to save the economy,” he said.
