Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has called on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to convince his former appointee, Ken Ofori-Atta, to return to the country to account for his stewardship.

The former finance minister is facing allegations of corruption involving dubious deals he allegedly handled while in office.

Efforts to extradite Ofori-Atta have proven futile, as he is currently facing legal challenges in the United States over visa issues in an immigration court.

Addressing the issue, the outspoken legal practitioner urged former President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership to intervene in the extradition process.

Ofori-Atta has applied to become a US permanent resident through his son – Kpebu claims

Speaking on Key Points aired on TV3 on January 24, 2026, Kpebu argued that Ghanaians gave the NPP the mandate to serve, and therefore the party ought to be diligent in the fight against corruption in the country.

“Akufo-Addo and the NPP should step in. We gave them the privilege to serve, they had all the privileges, and today what we are getting is international embarrassment,” he said.

He further explained why the government is struggling with the extradition request, saying, “The US thrives on a lot of foreign investments and debts. The Japanese and Saudis have billions of investments in the US. Investing in America’s economy comes with protection… Looking at everything, if we judge by paper, it’s a very complex fight. He has millions of investments in the US, complicating the fight.”
