Former Finance Minister of Ghana, Ken Ofori-Atta, has appeared before a United States court in connection with questions surrounding his immigration status, as legal and diplomatic developments unfold between Ghana and the US.

The hearing is taking place in a US immigration court in Virginia following Mr. Ofori-Atta’s detention by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier this month.

US authorities contend that the former finance minister no longer has lawful status to remain in the country, with officials indicating that his visitor visa was revoked.

A determination on his immigration situation — and the possibility of extradition to Ghana to face pending legal matters — could follow from the proceedings.
