The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has revealed that Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy faced an unexpected delay at a Moroccan airport while travelling to headline a major event at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Motsepe made the disclosure during a recent press conference, explaining that the music star was briefly held by customs officials over concerns related to his jewellery.

According to the CAF boss, the matter was resolved swiftly after his personal intervention.

Motsepe said, “Recently, I was called that I needed to intervene because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport after customs officers noticed his heavy and beautiful gold jewellery. I intervened and it was resolved.”

Despite the initial delay, Burna Boy went on to successfully headline the TotalEnergies AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat on January 16, thrilling fans with a high-energy performance.

The concert also featured Ghanaian star Stonebwoy, alongside Moroccan artists Stormy and Jaylann.

In other news, Stanley Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s unlikely hero on Saturday night, January 17, as the Super Eagles defeated Egypt on penalties to claim the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After over 95 minutes of near misses and VAR drama ended goalless, it was the nerve of the goalkeeper that finally separated the sides.

Nwabali produced two decisive saves in a tense shootout to hand Nigeria a hard-earned victory and a podium finish to cap their tournament in style.

The final will be played between Senegal and the host country, Morocco, today.
