Employers across sectors now prioritise degree-level qualifications
A new report has found that a university degree is increasingly essential for securing employment and advancing careers in Ghana’s evolving job market.
The 2026 Ghana Job Market Report, released by Jobberman Ghana in partnership with Nexford University, said employers across sectors now prioritised degree-level qualifications as a standard requirement for most professional roles.
Based on real-time data from job listings and applicant activity, the report indicated that 69 per cent of candidates with one to five years’ work experience held a university degree.
It said even at entry level, 37 per cent of applicants with little or no experience already possessed a degree, reflecting shifting expectations for early-career recruitment.
“Employers are not just hiring for roles, they are hiring for readiness, versatility, and long-term potential. A bachelor’s degree is increasingly the baseline that signals all three,” the report stated.
It noted that more than 55 per cent of advertised vacancies explicitly required a bachelor’s degree, establishing it as an industry benchmark.
The report said degree holders dominated applicant pools at all career stages, from entry-level to executive positions, underscoring the qualification’s importance for upward mobility.
It warned that jobseekers without degrees were competing in a smaller and more uncertain labour market, adding that non-degree applicants struggled to stand out unless they possessed highly specialised skills or vocational certifications.
The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) was identified as particularly valuable because of its applicability across sectors including education, technology, finance, manufacturing and media.
The report said skills such as budgeting, project coordination, strategic communication and data analysis, which are core components of a BBA, were in high demand.
It further emphasised the growing importance of soft skills, including communication, problem-solving and emotional intelligence, which it said were critical for promotion and leadership roles.
The data also showed a clear salary advantage for degree holders, reinforcing the return on investment in higher education.
“The labour market is moving to skills-based hiring. Skills include both hard and soft skills, both of which you can obtain with a degree,” the report said.
