Gov’t will resolve transport crisis

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has assured the public that government is taking concrete steps to resolve the recent transport challenges confronting commuters across the country.

Her assurance comes amid a scarcity of commercial vehicles, a situation that has led to long queues, commuter frustration and the exploitation of passengers by some drivers.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting with operators in the transport sector on Friday, January 16, the Vice President acknowledged the difficulties currently faced by passengers, including congestion at terminals and extended waiting times.

She stressed that government is not turning a blind eye to the situation and called on all stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to address the challenges.

“Sometimes, the problem is caused by all kinds of situations, including even exploitation by some of our own drivers, long queues at bus stops and terminals, congestion and all kinds of stress that come with the situation.

“We want our fellow countrymen and women to be aware that government is not blind to the situation, that we have not seen and we don’t care. We don’t think it is somebody’s problem; it is everybody’s problem. That is why I started by saying that we need to team up to find the solutions,” she said.

According to the Vice President, government has rolled out measures to increase the availability of high-occupancy buses for both public and private transport operators.

“His Excellency has asked me to assure all of you that he will give support to Metro Mass, Aayalolo and the private sector with new high-occupancy buses in order to augment the services in the medium term,” she said.

She added that plans are also underway to fast-track the repair of broken-down buses to enable operators to deploy more vehicles onto the roads as quickly as possible.
