The Western Central Regional Police Command has confirmed that it is fast-tracking the autopsy on 18-year-old Sambo Usman, who was shot and killed during a police operation at Abosso on December 31, to facilitate the release of his body to the family.

Speaking to Citi News on Saturday, January 3, the Deputy Commander of the Western Central Regional Police Command, ACP Bismark Agyapong, said the police had no intention of harming civilians, emphasising that the Service’s primary duty is to protect lives and property.

He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that necessary processes were being expedited to enable the family to take possession of the body for burial.

“We have actually met with the family, and we consoled them, and we are doing everything possible for the process to finish quickly, for them to get the body and for the necessary action to be taken,” he said.

ACP Agyapong cautioned the public against interfering with police operations, particularly those targeting criminals and drug traffickers, warning that such interference could endanger both civilians and officers, and undermine ongoing security efforts.

The shooting occurred during an intelligence-led police operation in Abosso aimed at clamping down on criminal activities and drug peddling. ACP Agyapong noted that the police team faced tense circumstances during the operation, which ultimately resulted in the fatal shooting of the 18-year-old.

The incident sparked tension in the community, with some residents expressing anger over the killing, prompting the police to engage community leaders to help restore calm.
