Mr.\u00a0Kwabena\u00a0Mintah\u00a0Akandoh, Minister of Health,\u00a0has affirmed the critical role of traditional and alternative medicine in Ghana\u2019s healthcare system, describing it as both a heritage and a national asset.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a speech delivered by for him by Dr. Anastasia\u00a0Yirenkyi, Director of the Ministry\u2019s Traditional and Alternative Medicine Directorate, Mr.\u00a0Akandoh\u00a0highlighted that traditional medicine has long served as the primary care source for many, especially in underserved communities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He noted that about 70 per cent of Ghanaians currently rely on traditional or complementary medicine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the closing and certificate award ceremony for 268 practitioners of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (GHAFTRAM), who\u00a0participated\u00a0in the Professional Practice Course,\u00a0organised\u00a0by the Institute of Traditional Medicine (ITAM), under the auspices of the University of Science and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-lazyloaded=\"1\" the Ministry\u2019s commitment to integrating and regulating the sector.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said the Professional Practice Course, a model for capacity\u00a0building,\u00a0is a pioneering national initiative and directly responds to the Ministry\u2019s policy framework on traditional and alternative medicine development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said the\u00a0programme\u00a0equipped practitioners with fundamental knowledge and\u00a0improves\u00a0their competencies in one clinical assessment and patient management, laboratory interpretation and good manufacturing and quality assurance practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He cited the establishment of over 55 herbal units in public hospitals and a strategic partnership with India\u2019s Institute of Education and Research to promote academic exchange and global standards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry\u2019s strategy includes regulation, quality assurance, research, practitioner training, and alignment with Ghana\u2019s Universal Health Coverage goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Fiona\u00a0Brakah\u00a0of\u00a0WHO\u00a0Country Director, represented by Dr. Angela\u00a0Ackon, noted that 80 per cent of Africa\u2019s population depends on traditional medicine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She praised ITAM and GHAFTRAM\u2019s efforts but acknowledged challenges such as unregistered practitioners and lack of formal training.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said the WHO supports initiatives to professionalize the sector and expand access\u00a0in\u00a0rural areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She emphasized a call to action to include expanding carbon-neutrality initiatives, attract more practitioners nationwide and across Africa and collaborate with the Ministry of Health, FDA, and other agencies to embed traditional medicine into national health policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Others are to strengthen partnerships with academic institutions to document the health impacts of traditional medicine and contribute to global knowledge and leverage community trust to promote health education, disease prevention, and early detection outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Lydia\u00a0Aziato, UHAS Vice Chancellor, stressed the need for structured training and integration of indigenous knowledge with modern diagnostics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said ITAM races to plug the void for structured training, certification, and integration of health assessments to improve traditional medicine practices,\u00a0efficacy\u00a0and quality assurance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0assured\u00a0that continuous learning would lead to diploma certification and encouraged practitioners to take advantage of the opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Kwame B.
