Nice breeze, worship songs still in my head. Then, just as we were about to move, the driver gently leaned back and said in that polite Ghanaian negotiation tone:<br\/>\u201cBoss, please let\u2019s go off trip.\u201d<\/p><p>I asked him, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p><p>He replied, \u201cUber will take around GH\u00a260 from this ride\u2026 just like that\u2026 for sitting in an office and doing app.\u201d<\/p><p>You know that moment where you pause and blink twice? That was me.<\/p><p>So I explained that what he calls \u201cjust app\u201d involves things like paying Google for the Maps API, maintaining servers, customer support, fraud systems \u2014 and all those things don\u2019t run on prayer and fasting. They cost real dollars.<\/p><p>He still wasn\u2019t fully convinced. He hit me with a quick Ghana market analysis: \u201cUber has more than 4,000 cars in this country. If each driver pays around 200 cedis a day, do you know how much they are getting?!\u201d<\/p><p>Classic. Fast multiplication, no expenses, no tax, no overhead. Straight profit calculation with confidence.<\/p><p>So I told him plainly \u2014 Uber is actually making losses in markets like Ghana. Their underlying cost to run the system here is not that different from America \u2014 Google API doesn\u2019t say \u201cSince it\u2019s Ghana, let me charge small.\u201d But because of our purchasing power, they can\u2019t charge Ghanaian riders at the true operational cost. So they are basically bleeding to stay in the market\u2026 playing long-term investment games.<\/p><p>He went quiet. The kind of silence that says, \u201cI hear you, but chale my fuel too is not on scholarship.\u201d<\/p><p>At this point, I decided to call a friend who works in that mobility space to sanity-check my argument. We broke it down on the call, and I realised something crucial \u2014 both Uber and the driver are struggling, just on different balance sheets. Uber is taking a hit to build market share. The driver is hustling to survive daily. And in Ghana, these systems only work when someone like me comes in to broker a fair middle ground \u2014 which is literally my line of work.<\/p><p>So I told the driver this: \u201cEverybody is adjusting to survive. Uber is absorbing losses to stay here. You\u2019re adjusting trips to make ends meet. My job in life is to find that sweet spot where both parties can breathe without fighting.\u201d<\/p><p>He nodded slowly \u2014 the Uber driver acceptance nod. The matter had landed.<\/p><p>And Then\u2026 The Plot Twist<\/p><p>The person I was with needed to drop off on the way. The driver looked at me and said \u2014 calmly, with a small smile: \u201cBut boss\u2026 why didn\u2019t you add it as a stop?
