{"id":417945,"date":"2025-10-14T04:39:45","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T04:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/10\/14\/ghana-loses-gh%c2%a2300-million-annually-to-floods-2\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T04:39:45","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T04:39:45","slug":"ghana-loses-gh%c2%a2300-million-annually-to-floods-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/10\/14\/ghana-loses-gh%c2%a2300-million-annually-to-floods-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana loses GH\u00a2300 million annually to floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/636\/63654260.295.jpg\" alt=\"Ghana loses an estimated GH\u00a2300 million every year as a result of floods\" title=\"Ghana loses an estimated GH\u00a2300 million every year as a result of floods\" width=\"295\" height=\"149\" \/> <span class=\"image_caption\"><span>Ghana loses an estimated GH\u00a2300 million every year as a result of floods<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"-webkit-user-select: none; -webkit-touch-callout: none; -moz-user-select: none; -ms-user-select: none; user-select: none;\">\n<p id=\"article-123\">The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has revealed that Ghana loses an estimated GH\u00a2300 million every year as a result of floods and related disasters.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UNDP, the Greater Accra Region alone accounts for about GH\u00a2200 million of these annual losses whenever heavy rains occur.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation was made by Dr Amina Sammo, UNDP\u2019s Coordinator for the Insurance Risk Finance Facility, during Ghana\u2019s commemoration of the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR).<\/p>\n<p>The event, organised by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), was held under the global theme: \u201cFund Resilience, Not Disasters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sammo underscored that disasters continue to exact a heavy toll on economies across the globe, noting that direct global losses from floods and other disasters are estimated at over US$202 billion annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Ghana, disasters cost the nation approximately GH\u00a2300 million every year, mainly due to floods, droughts, and related emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>In the Greater Accra region alone, flood losses exceed GH\u00a2200 million annually \u2014 funds that could otherwise be used to improve critical infrastructure,\u201d Dr. Sammo stated.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the UNDP is partnering with the Government of Ghana, through NADMO, to develop a Disaster Risk Finance Strategy Framework.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative aims to establish a parametric flood risk insurance solution for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) and to expand inclusive insurance coverage for small businesses, farmers, and informal sector workers.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sammo commended NADMO, the Ministry of Finance and the National Insurance Commission for their leadership in promoting disaster risk reduction and financial resilience.<\/p>\n<p>She urged all stakeholders to take this year\u2019s commemoration as a call to action to prioritise investments in disaster preparedness and resilience, rather than focusing solely on recovery after disasters occur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must fund resilience, not disasters.
