{"id":411226,"date":"2025-10-02T15:08:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T15:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/10\/02\/mahama-swears-in-cyber-security-committee-as-ghana-prepares-for-un-treaty-signing\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T15:08:57","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T15:08:57","slug":"mahama-swears-in-cyber-security-committee-as-ghana-prepares-for-un-treaty-signing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/10\/02\/mahama-swears-in-cyber-security-committee-as-ghana-prepares-for-un-treaty-signing\/","title":{"rendered":"Mahama Swears In Cyber Security Committee as Ghana Prepares for UN Treaty Signing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President John Dramani Mahama has assembled an 18-member task force to coordinate Ghana\u2019s cybersecurity response, marking what officials describe as a watershed moment in the country\u2019s digital defence strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The Joint National Cyber Security Committee (JCC) was inaugurated at Burma Camp on October 1, 2025, during ceremonies launching National Cyber Security Awareness Month under the theme \u201cBuilding a Safe, Informed and Accountable Digital Space\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The committee brings together representatives from Ghana\u2019s security and intelligence agencies to work alongside the Cyber Security Authority, aiming to ensure what Mahama called \u201ccoherence, information sharing, and proactive responses\u201d to digital threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCybersecurity must not be fragmented,\u201d the President said at the launch. \u201cIt demands unity of purpose, a clear strategy and disciplined education\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mahama used blunt language to describe the borderless nature of modern cyber threats. \u201cA hacker in one country can breach systems halfway across the world within seconds, and that is why Ghana cannot act alone,\u201d he warned, emphasizing the need for international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>The President revealed that Ghana would ratify and sign the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime this month\u2014a significant commitment given the treaty only opens for signature on October 25, 2025, at a ceremony in Hanoi, Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mahama, the UN treaty provides \u201cnew tools for investigating cyber attacks, prosecuting offenders and protecting critical infrastructure\u201d. Ghana is already party to both the African Union\u2019s Malabo Convention on Cyber Security and the Council of Europe\u2019s Budapest Convention on Cybercrime.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as cybercrime extracts trillions from global economies annually. The UN Convention will enter into force 90 days after the 40th country ratifies it, creating a new framework for cross-border prosecution and extradition of cybercriminals.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond treaties and committees, Mahama stressed that Ghana\u2019s digital safety depends on widespread public awareness. He outlined plans for school curricula integration, community training programs, and nationwide campaigns designed to make cybersecurity knowledge accessible beyond technical experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough school-based curricula, community training, and public awareness campaigns, perceptions about cybersecurity will be demystified,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n<p>The awareness month will feature workshops, public forums, and specialized training targeting students, businesses, and government agencies.
