Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the democracy of India during his address to the Ghana Parliament. PM Modi said that democracy is not just a system in India but a part of our fundamental values.<\/p>\n

During his address, the Prime Minister said there are 2,500 political parties in India, a fact that left lawmakers of Ghana stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, democracy is not merely a system; it is a part of our fundamental values\u2026India has over 2,500 political parties,” he said with a smile, sparking murmurs in the House.<\/p>\n

He then repeated the fact to let it sink in among the members of Ghana\u2019s Parliament.<\/p>\n

\u201cI repeat, India has over 2,500 political parties. 20 different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, and thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who came to India have always been welcomed with open hearts,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrue democracy promotes discussion and debate. It unites people. It supports dignity and promotes human rights,” he said.<\/p>\n

PM Modi said the histories of India and Ghana bear the scars of colonial rule, but their spirits have always remained free and fearless.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, PM Modi was conferred with \u2018The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana\u2019, the country\u2019s national honour, for his \u201cdistinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership”. Modi received the award from the Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.<\/p>\n

In his acceptance speech, Modi said the award was a matter of great pride and honour for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI humbly accept the award on behalf of the 140 crore Indians,” he said, dedicating it to the aspirations and bright future of the youth of the two countries, the historical ties between Ghana and India, and their rich cultural traditions and diversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis honour is also a responsibility; to keep working towards a stronger India-Ghana friendship. India will always stand with the people of Ghana and continue to contribute as a trusted friend and development partner,” he said in an X post.<\/p>\n

The prime minister is in Ghana on the first leg of his five-nation tour. It is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Ghana in three decades.<\/p>\n
