Accra, May 16, GNA \u2013 An eleven-member Board of Directors for the Ghana Cocoa Board\u00a0(COCOBOD) has been inaugurated with a call to urgently reverse the fortunes of the ailing\u00a0cocoa sector. \u00a0<\/p>\n
The new board is chaired by Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and includes key figures such as the\u00a0Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson; Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson\u00a0Asiama; and Chief Executive Randy Abbey. \u00a0<\/p>\n
The rest are Alhaji Alhassan Kobina Ghansah; Vincent Oppong Asamoah; Deputy Minister for\u00a0Trade, Samson Ahi; \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Deputy Minister for Agriculture, John Dumelo; Alhaji Alhassan Bukari; Nana Charles Owusu and\u00a0Eric Turkson. \u00a0<\/p>\n
The inauguration was chaired by Energy Minister John Jinapor, who also serves as the Alternate\u00a0Minister for Finance. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Jinapor congratulated the new board members but expressed grave concern over the\u00a0current state of COCOBOD. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
He noted that while the institution was once a shining symbol of Ghana\u2019s economic strength,\u00a0recent years have seen a worrying decline. \u00a0<\/p>\n
He said the crop production, which previously peaked at 1 million metric tonnes, had slumped\u00a0to about 500,000 metric tonnes. \u00a0<\/p>\n
He, however, expressed confidence in the calibre of the newly constituted board, stating that\u00a0he was convinced they possessed the expertise and integrity to restore COCOBOD\u2019s lost glory. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr Forson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the board once again, having\u00a0previously been a member in his capacity as Deputy Finance Minister. \u00a0<\/p>\n
He explained that the new law governing COCOBOD mandated the inclusion of both the Finance\u00a0Minister and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana on its board. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Forson underscored the enduring importance of cocoa to Ghana\u2019s economy, describing it as\u00a0the \u201cjewel of the economy,\u201d and lamented the massive mismanagement of COCOBOD in recent\u00a0years. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
He outlined plans by the government to introduce plantation farms by acquiring about 200,000\u00a0hectares of cocoa land, aiming to restore production levels to 1 million metric tonnes. \u00a0<\/p>\n
The Finance Minister asked the board to decisively address the issue of diseased cocoa farms,\u00a0especially in the Western Region, which continues to hamper productivity. He assured\u00a0COCOBOD of the full support of the Finance Ministry in all its endeavours. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Newly sworn-in Board Chairman, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, expressed his appreciation to the\u00a0President for the confidence reposed in the board. \u00a0<\/p>\n
He described their appointment as both an honour and a call to duty, pledging on behalf of the\u00a0members to lead a transformational agenda for the cocoa sector. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo promised to \u201creset, retool, and reimagine\u201d COCOBOD to restore it as a\u00a0pivotal institution in Ghana\u2019s economy. \u00a0<\/p>\n
He urged members of the political class to lead by example by actively engaging in farming to\u00a0inspire the youth. \u00a0<\/p>\n
