In the current fiscal year, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which distributes federal funds to public broadcasters, received $535 million dollars approved by Congress, according to a report on NPR.<\/p>\n
The report said NPR received around 1% of its funding from the US federal government, and slightly more indirectly. Its 246 member institutions operating more than 1,300 broadcasting stations receive between 8% and 10% of their funding from the CPB.<\/p>\n
According to the report, PBS and its broadcasting stations receive about 15% of their funding from the CPB.<\/p>\n
Trump has regularly criticized established media outlets, terming them \u201cfake news media,\u201d and cracked down on outlets that are critical of government policies.<\/p>\n
The Associated Press, one of the most significant news agencies worldwide with a strong reputation in the United States and abroad, was excluded from the White House press pool for refusing to call the Gulf of Mexico the \u201cGulf of America,\u201d as ordered by Trump.<\/p>\n
Trump has made clear his preference for conservative outlets such as Fox News and Newsmax.<\/p>\n
Reporters without Borders, an international non-governmental organization that monitors press freedom, noted in its 2025 Press Freedom Index: \u201cDonald Trump\u2019s second term as president has brought a troubling deterioration in press freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n
