{"id":323133,"date":"2025-04-08T09:21:44","date_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/04\/08\/bog-disowns-criminal-use-of-currency-boxes-calls-for-prosecution\/"},"modified":"2025-04-08T09:21:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:21:44","slug":"bog-disowns-criminal-use-of-currency-boxes-calls-for-prosecution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/04\/08\/bog-disowns-criminal-use-of-currency-boxes-calls-for-prosecution\/","title":{"rendered":"BoG disowns criminal use of currency boxes, calls for prosecution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"265\" data-end=\"501\">The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has raised concerns over the misuse of its currency transport boxes, cautioning that repurposing these containers\u2014especially for illegal activities\u2014poses a serious threat to the Bank\u2019s credibility and operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"643\">This warning follows the discovery of official BoG cash boxes at the centre of a large-scale counterfeiting operation uncovered in Sapeiman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"833\">During an exclusive tour of the crime scene, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, confirmed that the boxes found were authentic BoG property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"1014\">\u201cAuthorities have verified that these boxes are genuine,\u201d he revealed, raising critical questions about how official financial tools ended up in the hands of a criminal syndicate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1257\">In a statement titled <em data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1099\">\u201cUse and Misuse of Bank of Ghana Currency Transport Boxes,\u201d<\/em> the central bank addressed rising public anxiety over the improper use of its wooden cash containers, originally designed for transporting currency securely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1508\">\u201cThese boxes are robust, reusable, and well-suited to withstand wear and tear associated with logistics,\u201d the BoG explained, adding that commercial banks often return the boxes empty or occasionally repurpose them for non-currency-related logistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1823\">However, the Bank noted that some members of the public have obtained and reused the boxes for domestic or commercial purposes, such as storage or general transport. While this kind of casual repurposing is not necessarily illegal, the Bank warned of a sharp difference between such use and criminal exploitation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"1951\">\u201cThe BoG cannot be associated with any misuse of these boxes for criminal or unauthorized activities,\u201d the statement stressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1953\" data-end=\"2100\">\u201cReports have emerged indicating that certain individuals are using these boxes to implicate the Bank or undermine public trust in its operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2305\">The Bank emphasized that attempts to falsely associate it with illegal conduct through the misuse of its branded property must be treated as a serious offense, and called on law enforcement to intervene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2445\">\u201cMisuse of such boxes for criminal activities must be thoroughly investigated\u2026 and all persons found culpable prosecuted,\u201d the BoG stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2631\">In a time when visuals can easily mislead the public, the central bank urged Ghanaians not to interpret the presence of its branded boxes as a sign of official sanction or involvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2633\" data-end=\"2839\">\u201cA reused currency box does not carry the authority or endorsement of the nation\u2019s central bank,\u201d the BoG concluded, reaffirming its commitment to operational integrity and the safeguarding of public trust.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has raised concerns over the misuse of its currency transport boxes, cautioning that repurposing these containers\u2014especially for illegal activities\u2014poses a serious threat to the Bank\u2019s credibility and operations.
