{"id":318054,"date":"2025-03-29T17:16:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-29T17:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/03\/29\/former-eac-secretary-general-juma-mwapachu-dies-at-82\/"},"modified":"2025-03-29T17:16:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T17:16:13","slug":"former-eac-secretary-general-juma-mwapachu-dies-at-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2025\/03\/29\/former-eac-secretary-general-juma-mwapachu-dies-at-82\/","title":{"rendered":"Former EAC Secretary-General, Juma Mwapachu dies at 82"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/642\/64280890.295.jpg\" alt=\"The late Ambassador Juma Mwapachu\" title=\"The late Ambassador Juma Mwapachu\" width=\"295\" height=\"282\" \/> <span class=\"image_caption\"><span>The late Ambassador Juma Mwapachu<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"-webkit-user-select: none; -webkit-touch-callout: none; -moz-user-select: none; -ms-user-select: none; user-select: none;\">\n<p id=\"article-123\">Veteran politician and long-serving member of Tanzania\u2019s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Ambassador Juma Mwapachu, has passed away at Muhimbili National Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.<\/p>\n<p>News of his passing emerged on the evening of March 28, 2025, as reported by various media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Born on September 27, 1942, in Mwanza, Tanzania, Ambassador Mwapachu was a distinguished statesman who served in several key leadership roles.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, he was Tanzania\u2019s Ambassador to France before being appointed Secretary-General of the East African Community (EAC), succeeding Uganda\u2019s Amanya Mushega, whose five-year term ended on March 24, 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Mwapachu was appointed to this position by Tanzania\u2019s former President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, and the EAC Heads of State Summit on April 4, 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this appointment, he served as Tanzania\u2019s Honorary Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO.<\/p>\n<p>A trained lawyer, Mwapachu graduated with a law degree from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>He later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in International Law, International Institutions, and Diplomacy from the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy in New Delhi, India.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of his contributions, the University of Dar es Salaam awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Literature (Doctor of Literature, Honoris Causa) in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>He also held honorary degrees in Literature from the University of Dar es Salaam and Political Science from the National University of Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his career, Ambassador Juma V.
