Soldiers arrested in galamsey robbery won’t be protected

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has stated that it will not shield two of its personnel arrested in the Western Region for their alleged involvement in an attempted robbery at a mining company.

The suspects, together with two civilian accomplices, were arrested by the Prestea Police on Sunday, September 28, during an alleged attempt to rob LongShine Mining Company Limited, a Chinese-owned firm at Prestea-Obouhu.

According to the company’s Public Relations Officer, Zion Rootman, the four men—two dressed in military uniforms and two masked civilians—stormed the site in a pickup truck before being apprehended.

In a statement, GAF Acting Director General of Public Relations, Captain (GN) Veronica Adzo Arhin, said the soldiers, if found culpable, would face the full rigours of the law.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that it will not shield the personnel involved in criminal activities,” the statement emphasised.

The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
