Developmental economist and University of Ghana lecturer, Dr. George Domfe, has challenged what he describes as the deliberate distortion of facts surrounding Ghana’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In a comment made on December 28, 2025, Dr. Domfe questioned claims suggesting that the IMF initiated the extension of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme. He argued that such assertions mislead the public and obscure the true sequence of events.

“Who actually wrote the letter to the IMF on 2nd December 2025 requesting an extension of the Extended Credit Facility programme?” he asked, insisting that the request originated from Ghana rather than the IMF.

Dr. Domfe further criticized efforts to create what he called a false impression about the state of the economy, noting that some supporters of the government accept official narratives without adequate scrutiny. He expressed concern that exaggerated claims risk eroding public trust and accountability.

He also referenced public discourse around flagship initiatives such as the 24-hour economy, suggesting that some portrayals imply full implementation and the complete elimination of unemployment, which he described as misleading.

According to Dr. Domfe, honest communication and transparency are essential for effective economic management and democratic accountability. “Ghana deserves better,” he concluded, calling for a more truthful and evidence-based conversation about the country’s economic realities.
