Prayers have resumed at the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Regional capital under heavy police protection, a day after a shooting incident at the facility left 10 worshippers seriously injured and heightened security concerns in the area.
Despite the attack on Friday, December 26, Muslim faithful returned to the mosque on Saturday to observe their daily prayers, as security personnel maintained a strong presence in and around the premises to forestall any further violence or possible reprisals.
A visit by Channel One News on the afternoon of Saturday, December 28, showed calm at the mosque, with worshippers going about their prayers amid visible police patrols. Law enforcement officers were stationed at strategic points to reassure the community and prevent disturbances.
The shooting incident occurred when masked assailants reportedly stormed the mosque during prayers and opened fire, injuring 10 people. Two of the victims were said to be in critical condition and are currently receiving medical care.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack may be linked to a long-running leadership dispute over the position of Chief Imam, a conflict that has divided the Muslim community in Ho for several years despite multiple mediation efforts.
In response, the Volta Regional Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for the main suspects behind the attack. While 15 individuals have been arrested to assist with investigations, police say the principal perpetrators are still at large.
The Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, has assured residents that investigations are progressing and that measures are being taken to address both the criminal aspects of the case and the underlying causes of the violence.
