NPP can win elections without an Akan candidate

The Member of Parliament for Abetifi and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, says the party is capable of winning national elections without fielding an Akan presidential candidate.

His comments come amid public debate following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, with some attributing the loss to the religion and ethnicity of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 23, during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Dr. Acheampong rejected claims that the NPP is an Akan-dominated party.

According to him, the NPP is a national party that draws support from all parts of the country.

When asked whether the NPP could win an election without an Akan candidate, Dr. Acheampong responded in the affirmative, saying, “Yes.”

He stressed that the party’s focus is on presenting the best candidate, regardless of ethnic background.

“We, NPP as a political party, exist to win elections with the best candidate. Nobody [cares where the candidate comes from]. We want to win elections, and in any elections, we put our best foot forward. We’re a national party. We have votes from everywhere in this country,” he stated.

The NPP is expected to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
