Salah scores late winner goal as Egypt come from behind to beat Zimbabwe

Mohamed Salah struck deep into stoppage time as Egypt staged a late comeback to defeat Zimbabwe 2–1 in their opening Group B match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Liverpool forward, still chasing his first AFCON title, rescued the seven-time champions after a frustrating display that threatened to derail their campaign at the first hurdle in Agadir.

Zimbabwe stunned Egypt against the run of play in the first half when Prince Dube capitalised on a rare opening to put the Warriors ahead, despite the Pharaohs’ sustained pressure. Egypt created several chances but were repeatedly denied by a combination of wasteful finishing and an inspired performance from veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 64th minute when Manchester City striker Omar Marmoush smashed home the equaliser to restore parity and shift momentum in Egypt’s favour.

As the match drifted into stoppage time and Zimbabwe clung on for a potential upset, Salah pounced on a loose ball inside the box to slot home the winner, sparking celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.

The victory gives Egypt a crucial three points to start their Group B campaign, although questions remain over whether they can maintain their finishing form ahead of tougher tests. They return to action on Friday in Agadir against South Africa, while Zimbabwe travels to Marrakesh to face Angola.
