The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has announced the temporary closure of five forts across the country to allow for essential maintenance and conservation works.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 19, 2025, the Board said the affected sites are Fort Apollonia at Beyin, Fort St. Anthony in Axim, Fort Orange in Sekondi, James Fort in Jamestown, and Ussher Fort at Usshertown. The closures took effect from Thursday, December 18, 2025.
According to the GMMB, the decision aims to facilitate critical maintenance, safety assessments, and conservation activities to preserve the structural integrity and historical significance of the heritage sites.
The Board apologised to the public, stakeholders, and visitors for any inconvenience the temporary closures may cause and appealed for understanding as efforts continue to ensure the long-term preservation and safety of the forts.
It assured the public that further updates would be communicated in due course.
