AngloGold Ashanti supports PWDs with assistive devices

As part of activities marking this year’s World Disability Day, AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, has renewed its commitment to inclusion and community wellbeing with the donation of assistive devices to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in its host communities.

The event brought together representatives from the Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District Assemblies, disability group leaders, traditional authorities, and beneficiaries. Alongside the donations, AngloGold Ashanti also provided free on-site health screening and treatment for PWDs.

The initiative forms part of the Mine’s broader social development efforts aimed at empowering vulnerable groups and promoting equitable access to opportunities across the Obuasi area.

Presenting the items on behalf of the Mine, Daniel Asare, Community Infrastructure Superintendent and representative of the Community Relations Manager, reaffirmed AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to building an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of physical ability, can fully participate in socio-economic activities.

He added that the gesture aligns with global efforts to remove barriers faced by persons with disabilities and supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 10 on reducing inequalities.

The donated assistive devices included wheelchairs, white canes, crutches, hearing aids, walking frames, and other mobility aids designed to improve independence, comfort, and daily living.

“This support is not just about providing equipment,” Mr. Asare said. “It is about ensuring dignity, enhancing mobility, and enabling persons with disabilities to pursue their aspirations without unnecessary limitations.”

Receiving the items on behalf of beneficiaries, Kwame Ankrah, Chairman of the Obuasi East branch of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, expressed appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti, noting that the gesture would significantly improve mobility, self-reliance, and productivity among PWDs who often face exclusion.

Obuasi East Municipal Coordinating Director, Richard Blevi, also commended the Mine for its ongoing collaboration and commitment to disability inclusion, reaffirming the Assembly’s resolve to implement programmes that enhance the well-being and empowerment of PWDs.

World Disability Day, observed annually on December 3, promotes awareness, dignity, and the rights of persons with disabilities.

This year’s theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” aligns strongly with AngloGold Ashanti’s social investment priorities.
