The Senegalese government announced in a Dec 14 statement the 68th ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS awarded Senegal the presidency of the ECOWAS Commission for the 2026–2030 period.
According to the statement, the appointment reflects the “renewed trust and confidence” of member states in Senegal. It also confirms the country’s credibility and its “steady and determined commitment to regional integration, stronger community governance, and the balanced development of the West African region.”
The nomination comes at a time of major regional challenges, including security instability, prolonged political transitions, and coups in several member states.
Senegal has taken a mediation role in addressing these challenges. In July 2024, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was appointed ECOWAS “facilitator” to lead dialogue with the three Alliance of Sahel States countries—Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—which had threatened to leave the organization. At the same time, he called for reforms to make ECOWAS more effective in responding to political and security challenges, stressing the need for an organization that is “united, reformed, and focused on its people.”
