President of GHANET, Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin
The Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has marked World AIDS Day with a health walk in Accra aimed at promoting peace, raising awareness and rallying national support ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the 2025 International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA).
Speaking at the event, the President of GHANET, Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, said the health walk served as this year’s main national commemoration of World AIDS Day, observed globally on December 1, 2025.
“The purpose of today’s programme is to mark World AIDS Day. We are using this health walk to keep the peace and to celebrate the day,” he explained.
Ortsin noted that unlike previous years, no additional national event would be held to mark the day, making the health walk the focal point of activities for 2025.
He further highlighted Ghana’s historic role as host of ICASA 2025 the largest HIV and AIDS conference on the African continent and the second largest in the world.
“Ghana is hosting ICASA for the first time, from 3rd December to 8th December. This is an opportunity for us to create more awareness about the event and make sure Ghana participates and participates well,” he said.
The GHANET President stressed that the upcoming conference would bring together African countries, experts, researchers, and global stakeholders to share ideas and findings aimed at ending the AIDS epidemic on the continent.
“Africa unites against AIDS. We are bringing African countries together to share ideas, research findings and strategies on how we can end the AIDS menace,” he added.
GHANET says this year’s World AIDS Day commemoration, combined with preparations for ICASA, underscores the need for Ghana and the wider continent to strengthen public education, improve access to treatment and sustain efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination.
