Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga says the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has regained stability and provider confidence under the Mahama administration, following what he described as years of decline under the previous government.
Contributing to the conclusion of the debate on the 2026 Budget and Economic Policy on Thursday, November 27, in Parliament, Mr. Ayariga said the Authority is now financially reliable and no longer struggling to meet its obligations to healthcare providers.
He argued that the improved funding has restored trust between healthcare facilities and the insurance scheme.
Mr. Ayariga maintained that the reforms and financial support rolled out under the current administration have significantly strengthened the NHIA’s performance and credibility within the health sector.
The Majority Leader said, “Mr. Speaker, the health sector is doing well now. The NHIA has its fund uncapped. And since then, an additional GHC3.4 billion has been given to the NHIA. The highest in the history of the scheme.
“Healthcare providers are now confident; they know that when they treat patients and make claims under NHIS, they will be reimbursed. There’s greater confidence in NHIA. NHIA has become financially reliable, it has become stable, and it’s trusted by providers. Under the NPP, it was collapsing.”
