Dr Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister for Justice has responded to a legal challenge over religious rules at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (SHS).
The case, filed in December 2024 by lawyer Shafic Osman, claims that the school restricts Muslim students from wearing the hijab, fasting during Ramadan, and practicing other aspects of their faith.
The plaintiffs argue that these rules violate Ghana’s constitutional protections for religious freedom.
In his response, the Attorney General rejected the claims, saying that Wesley Girls’ SHS, which is run by the Methodist Church of Ghana, has the right to uphold its Methodist values.
The AG explained that the school can establish rules based on its religious identity, even if these rules limit how students of other faiths express their beliefs.
The case now awaits further consideration by the Supreme Court, which will determine whether the school’s policies are consistent with the Constitution.
