The accident, which killed one NAIMOS taskforce member and left four others seriously injured occurred late on Wednesday as the team travelled to Obuasi after an operation at a concession in Anyankyerim, which had been taken over by illegal miners.

A statement issued on the day of the incident by Mr. Schandorf, who serves as Media Relations Officer at the Ministry, confirmed the fatality and the injuries.

“Tragically, one member of the taskforce has been confirmed dead, while the remaining four sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical care,” the statement said.

It added: “The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources regrets to announce that a team of five (5) members of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) was involved in a fatal motor accident today near the Obuasi Airport area.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, together with the military hierarchy, on Friday, November 21, visited the family of the NAIMOS military officer, Private Sarfo Agyapong, who lost his life in the crash.

“I bring you greetings from President John Dramani Mahama. Our brother, Private Agyapong, died in the line of duty to save Ghana. He was fighting so that our forests and waters would be preserved. We will make all necessary arrangements to support the family. So please be consoled and be informed that your son is a hero for Ghana.”
