The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, Lydia Yaako Donkor, has pointed out the growing sophistication of vehicle crime in the country.

In a post shared on her X page on Monday, November 17, 2025, she noted that vehicle crime has evolved over the years.

“Vehicle crime has grown into a highly coordinated international criminal economy. A single stolen vehicle can travel across several borders, support other illicit activities, and strengthen organised criminal networks. Confronting this threat requires strong intelligence, advanced tools, and global cooperation,” she wrote.

Lydia Yaako Donkor revealed that she recently joined global law enforcement leaders at INTERPOL’s 5th Global Conference on Vehicle Crime, where experts examined how digital forensics, AI-driven analysis, and modern investigative approaches are influencing global strategies against vehicle crime.

She said the discussions affirmed what the CID experiences daily, that criminal methods are rapidly evolving and authorities must continue to innovate.

“The conversations confirmed what we see in our work every day. Criminal techniques are changing, and law enforcement must stay ahead through innovation and collaboration,” Yaako Donkor noted.

According to her, many of the recommendations from the conference are already being applied by the CID in Ghana.

She explained that the department employs a strong financial crime strategy, including follow-the-money techniques, proceeds tracing, and asset recovery. She added that intelligence sharing with regional and international partners has been strengthened to support quick recovery and verification of stolen vehicles.

“We apply a strong financial crime approach through follow-the-money techniques, proceeds tracing, and asset recovery. We have also deepened intelligence sharing with regional and international partners, which supports quick recovery and verification of stolen vehicles. Our ongoing collaboration with ports, shipping lines, transport operators, and insurance bodies directly addresses vulnerabilities identified in the global freight and logistics sector,” she wrote.

Yaako Donkor emphasised that recent CID operations targeting vehicle crime have gained international attention, with Ghana receiving commendation for its strong investigative outcomes and effective cross-border cooperation.

This recognition, she said, reinforces Ghana’s reputation as a stable and secure destination for business, travel, and investment.

“Recent CID operations on vehicle crime have gained international attention, and Ghana has been commended for its strong investigative results and effective cross-border cooperation,” Yaako Donkor added.
