Although many Ghanaians believe that politicians rarely face punishment for their actions, a few significant cases prove that justice does, at times, prevail. These examples challenge the perception of political immunity and illustrate that the rule of law can reach all citizens.
Ken Kuranchie:
As a member of the New Patriotic Party and a former media board official, Kuranchie faced legal repercussions in 2012 after the court deemed one of his articles on an election petition contemptuous. He served a three-week prison term, showing that even media-affiliated politicians aren’t beyond judicial scrutiny.
Montie FM Trio:
Radio personalities Salifu Maase (Mugabe), Aku Gunn, and Alistair Nelson came under fire after using their platform to insult and threaten members of the judiciary, including the Chief Justice. They were each handed three-month prison sentences, though they were later pardoned by President Nana Akufo-Addo, sparking public debate over executive leniency.
Jerry John Rawlings:
Long before leading Ghana, Rawlings faced imprisonment and a death sentence following an unsuccessful coup attempt in 1979. His punishment was later commuted, paving the way for his political ascent and transformation into a national leader.
Adamu Dramani Sakande:
The late Bawku Central MP was found guilty of falsifying documents and perjury. His conviction led to a two-year concurrent sentence.
Collectively, these cases serve as reminders that Ghana’s justice system, though imperfect, has occasionally demonstrated its ability to enforce accountability among those in power.
