The Ghana Medical Association has elected Professor Ernest Yorke as its new President, following a highly contested internal election held on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Prof Yorke secured 1,857 votes, representing 53.6% of all valid ballots cast, defeating his closest contender, Dr Justice Yankson, in an election closely monitored by medical professionals nationwide.

The results were declared by the Chairperson of the GMA Electoral Committee, Dr Rita Larsen-Reindorf, who described the process as free, fair, and transparent.

The election concluded during the 67th Annual Conference of the GMA.

Prof Yorke is an accomplished educator, clinician, and health advocate. He is a Fellow of both the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School and works as a Consultant Physician and endocrinologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Over the years, he has taken on several leadership roles within the GMA, including Junior Doctors’ Representative, Divisional Secretary, Divisional Vice Chair, and Member of the GMA Council.

His election marks a continuation of his long-standing commitment to medical policy development, professional welfare, and healthcare advocacy in Ghana.
